Licensing (apply's to ArcGIS 10 or higher only).
Previous versions of ArcGIS used either a network license or a dongle on your own computer. As of version 10 this has changed. The following options are available:
- network license, gets the license from a network server at ITC (default setting)
- network license with license redirection, gets the license from a network server at ITC but with the help of the ITC Software Manager allows you to be outside the ITC network, license request are forwarded over the internet to the ITC network.
- license borrowing, allows you to borrow a license from the ITC network server for 40 days, meaning you do not need a network connection until the borrowing expires. The borrowing can be activated with the ArcGIS administrator tool. This is in the startmenu of your computer after the installation of ArcGIS.
- local license, your ArcGIS installation can be activated to have a local license (for staff only), this is an annual license and has to be reactivated every year in January, this activation does not require a dongle.
For other ESRI products contact the helpdesk, Arcgis Server, ArcSDE, ArcPad.
Install information:
Installation
Please uninstall all third party plugins for previous ArcGIS versions. This should be done from the control panel, Add Remove Programs. Some older plug ins may not work for this version of ArcGIS. The automatic install will not show error messages if an error occurs, it will then simply fail to install ArcGIS.
- Developer Kits can be obtained from the IT helpdesk.
- ArcGIS workstation is still available, if you need this then please contact the helpdesk
- Note that incompatible ESRI products (Workflow manager, Archydro) may be uninstalled during this installation. After the installation is done you may need to reinstall an updated version.

Technical / Known Issues:
Common problems in ArcGis
- ArcGis crashes on startup, this often occurs when the personal Arcgis files are corrupted. These files can be deleted from the your user profile (c:\users\username\appdata\local\esri). The entire esri directory from this subdirectory can be deleted. Note however that settings and configuration files that you have created will be lost.
- ArcGis crashes on startup, if your default printer is not connected to your printer or not accessible then ArcGis may crash during startup. Make sure your default printer is accessible.
- Slow performance, make sure that your computer has at least 4Gb memory and a dual core processor.
- Slow startup when using license borrowing, change the license server string in the ArcGIS administrator to: arcgis.license.utwente.nl
